A new beat biopic about the stormy events between Lucien Carr and David Kammerer back in NYC in 1944 is in production. This film is called Kill Your Darlings. Jesse Eisenberg will play Allen Ginsberg, Chris Evans will be Jack Kerouac, and Ben Whishaw is slated to play Lucien Carr.
Kerouac, Burroughs, Ginsberg, Carr, and many others met in the 1940s in NYC. At that time Carr and Ginsberg were attending Columbia University. Carr had also met Kerouac, who was in the Merchant Marines for a while but also an avid writer.
The group’s ties were mainly literary interests, and they were looking for a “new vision” or writing style as well as partying together. One of the darker events that happened in this early part of the beat generation was that Carr was stalked by David Kammerer, who was doing some crazy things and in love with Carr. See more here, though there might be film spoilers. The fricton and outcome of that seems to be the main subject of Kill Your Darlings.
I just saw Jesse Eisenberg in Adventureland, and he was pretty good in it. We mainly saw the film because we have a group of actors we follow, who are generally part of the Judd Apatow group, which include some guys in Adventureland like Bill Hader and Martin Starr.
