Ray Manzarek

When Ray Manzarek, of the Doors, died, I heard it on the car radio on the way to work. I didn’t rush to blog about it because it shocked me so, and later I got busy. So here it is.

Ray Manzarek and Michael McClure (who is in quite a few Kerouac novels) used to jam together. I saw them once at the Whiskey in LA. Here’s a write-up of that experience.

Manzarek died on May 20 of bile-duct cancer.

My favorite story of him and Jim Morrison is how they were talking on Venice Beach, when Morrison shared his lyrics of the song “Moonlight Drive”. This is partly how the Doors all started.

Let’s swim to the moon
Let’s climb through the tide
Penetrate the evenin’ that the
City sleeps to hide
Let’s swim out tonight, love
It’s our turn to try
Parked beside the ocean
On our moonlight drive
